Administrative Policy

Thank you for being here. We hope this brief statement of policy can help address any questions you may have about policies and practices on the Shared Purpose network. If you have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

  1. Our vision and service

    • SharedPurpose.Net is working closely with individuals and groups to support an emerging new vision of a transformed and inspiring new American politics.

    • This is a sensitive and volatile subject, with many implications, many "hot buttons", and many possible points of controversy.

    • Here in the SharedPurpose environment, we encourage the growth of community, and the idea that people can come together from many different points of view, and work together successfully to address the many problems that concern us all.

  2. Censorship

    • In every way we can, we do our best to absolutely avoid any form of censorship. With very rare exception, we do not "delete messages" and we do not "delete users".

    • However, we do expect all our participants to meet a reasonable and responsible standard of citizenship, civility and community.
"I pledge to conduct myself in a way that is civil, honest, and respectful toward people with whom I disagree. I value people from different cultures, I value people with different ideas, and I value and cherish the democratic process." (excerpt from Coffee Party Civility Pledge)

    • We do not tolerate "ad hominem" personal attacks.
An ad hominem (Latin: "to the man"), also known as argumentum ad hominem, is an attempt to link the validity of a premise to a characteristic or belief of the person advocating the premise. The ad hominem is a classic logical fallacy, but it is not always fallacious. In some instances, questions of personal conduct, character, motives, etc., are legitimate and relevant to the issue. The tactic can be logically fallacious because insults and even true negative facts about an opponent's personal character have nothing to do with the logical merits of the opponent's arguments or assertions.

    • We require that all participants in SharedPurpose.Net projects and groups treat all other participants with respect.

    • We do realize that making these determinations is a judgment call, with personal overtones, and we approach this issue cautiously.

    • We have found over time that our general laissez-faire approach to network and community management can be successful when people lead by example, and not by attempting to impose a complex rule book. Generally, we do not need a "referee" or a moderator -- though it may turn out that we decide to moderate some forums, in service to some possible greater good.

  3. Intellectual property rights and responsbilities

    • We respect and appreciate the contributions to our work together brought here by our participants.

    • We do not claim ownership rights over any messages or statements posted here. In the words of the famous and historic "WELL" online community, "You own your own words".

    • At the same time, because this is a free and open system, we cannot and do not take responsibility for messages or content posted here. We will do our best to ensure compliance with all civil laws and regulations, and will take strong and prompt action if some illegal activity or content appearing on this web site is brought to our attention

  4. Membership services and responsbilities

    • We want your interactions with SharedPurpose.Net to be a successful and happy experience, and we are doing our best to insure that this is the case. Insofar as possible, we will help you with problems you may be having, or suggest possible solutions for issues that may arise.

    • Generally, we ask you to be responsible for managing your own email subscriptions. We offer many features for controlling your subscription, and we simply do not have the time to be managing these options for our participants. Please figure out how to use the system yourself to manage your preferences.

  5. Terms of service
