Petition: End the Violent Rhetoric
6,013 signatures

Dear Fellow Americans,

This is a heartbreaking moment in American history. Although we do not know the details of the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 19 others in Tucson, we do know that we are living through an era in which horrific acts of violence directed at politicians seem inevitable. It's heartbreaking in part because we're not shocked.

We're not shocked because violent language, vitriol and intolerance have become normal, useful and profitable in our culture. It is deliberately used in political campaign activities and packaged into entertainment by the media.

The world that we are co-creating right now as citizens, members of the media and politicians is a world at perpetual war. It is a world in which American people are not only at war with people outside the country, but with people inside the country. We believe this constant strife is weakening our nation.

At some point, as American citizens, we have to say: enough is enough with the violent rhetoric and the politics of division. As Abraham Lincoln said to a divided nation in 1861: We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies.

To politicians and the media, we'd like to say: stop pushing our buttons and behave responsibly. Stop inducing conflict among the American people to advance your political or profit-driven agenda.

We, the undersigned, accept our civic duty to end this era of violent rhetoric and the politics of division. It is our responsibility - as citizens, politicians and the members of the media - to encourage civil and informed political engagement. We recognize that civility, tolerance and understanding are values that form the foundation of a stable, prosperous, and democratic society.

Thank you,

1 Roland (Rody) Smith Rody_S@yahoo.com Colorado 80122 10/26 - 10:51 AM

The United States of America is supposed to be THE pillars of Democracy. Why is it that our policies are being forwarded by the most volatile and hate-filled minority of our population? One human citizen, one vote. Now and for all times.

http://www.change.org/petitions/voters-sign-petition-to-get-the-28th-amendment-to-the-constitution-into-law?share_id=kYfHEoghxR&pe=d2e I posted to our group this link. Help send Congress a message from We the People. This is to petition congress to add the 28th Amendment to limit time served in office is 12 years and no longer. In the 70's people had made an Amendment to allow 18 year olds to have the right to vote. It took less than 3 months and less than 8 days to ratify into law. Please visit Change.org site above and read my petition. Pass it along if you agree or simply delete it if you don't. I believe you will like what you read. Change.org has done many petitions and passed and changed laws to help people. Check it out please. Visit my Face book page to make sure I am who I say I am if you want to check me out first. I recommend it if you have any doubts. Dan Luttrell, Bedford, IN. Thank you for your consideration of my petition. Dan

The rich and powerful have their place, but it must be tempered by the voices of all those who have not the money and power. It is not that they have, but that they are given so much more by those "WE" (not me) elect to more and more power. I am only negative about myself, my skills, abilities and capacity to affect change or influence in others. I have never had the chance to speak out, speak up, or even join the chorus of voices (See the MGM movie, "Network") screaming out the window, "I'M MAD AS HE77, AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!" I have some personal writings I have offered to others for peruse, and have had no takers. This is the way I have been treated for 35 years as a voter and opinionated crank. My opinions are never worth anything since they have never come along with a large packet of either money or influence. There is little truly divisive in my writings, mostly decrying the system and suggesting methods of improving the system we already have, and make them work better, and in a manner more representative. Only those who have benefited excessively from the current system (influence on politics, major aid packages, tax-breaks, government contract influence), taking masses of the Nation's wealth out and not returning anything to the improvement of the Nation ("... establish Justice, promote the domestic Tranquility, ensure the common defence, provide for the General Welfare, ...") earn my disfavor. When they truly invest in the system that made their Wealth and Power possible, they earn my thanks, gratitude and respect. I would hope that my words would at least be read, and some comments and interest returned so that I could take my interests out of the bottom of the barrel and raise them to at least be seen in the crowd.

We need to break up the media moguls holdings. Such as the stranglehold on FOX NEWS by Rupert Murdock, is an Australian who came here to get richer through media conglomeration...which he started in Australia. We need to break up his conservative rhetoric spewing media empire and bring independence and truth back to the American media....just as our grandfathers broke up Standard Oil and Ma Bell in the middle of the last century!!!

It is time for candidates to stand up for their issues, stop mud slinging, stop the conflict and partisanship! If you have to gain votes by trashing your political opponent and do not have an agenda that you can stand up and promote than you have no reason to be running for office! Political Campaigns need to be reformed - (1) You cannot say ANYTHING (good or bad) about your opponent! (2) You must stand on your platform (3) Promote YOURSELF

Getting ready for 2012. Our fiscal house is NOT in order. We need tax reforn and need to tax those who've had the luxury of a free ride for ever so long. Do the words SHARED SACRIFICE mean a thing? I received my first degree in Eductation of the Hearing Impaired, but quit after 8 years. While I loved teaching, I'm totally opposed to tenure. I was so tired of watching aging teachers biding their time for retirement and bragging about it, while all the young and energetic teachers left in droves. Every teacher should receive a year-to-year contract based on competency. Health care - Don't anyone think of giving me a voucher! If I get a voucher, then everyone in congress gets the same voucher dollar for dollar. Paul Ryan, are you sitting on your brains? I'd love to see congress have a "dress down" day. I would laugh myself silly to see the Republicans out of their blue suits not knowing what to do wearing jeans and t shirts - they would still look stiff, talk stiff, walk stiff and vote against the good of the common man /woman /child.

We work best as a nation when we set aside petty differences and work together for a common goal. Our nation has been hit hard economically and we need to rebuild from the bottom up. We cannot afford to continue the partisan name-calling and fear-based rhetoric that has stained our nation with animosity.

My family and I have been at political odds for 20 plus years because of the negative political language used by politicians and media personalities. It's time now for this deplorable behavior to end. We live in a nation in which debate among politicians and media personalities is spread like wild fire by the media. When our politicians act like children having tantrums it negatively affects and has powerful influence on others in our communities and families. WE DEMAND THAT OUR POLITICIANS ACT WITH CIVILITY.

I want to be able to confront rabid Republicans who have hijacked our democratic process as to What their alternative plan is if important and necessary funding projects planned are deleted from the budget. We are responding their No votes in dazed silence, whatever can be said and explained and justified and validated should commence. Alternatives need be expected and demanded from those who are holding our budget process hostage, we can not silently accept this and we are intelligent enough to offer riveting reasons to approve the budget or insist on definite complementary compromise without being at the expense of the poorest among us...Sheesh!

I am disgusted by the tone and language I hear from many politicians. I expect the leaders of my government, local, state, and federal to be reasoned, educated and dignified. Lately, I have seen too much yelling and crying. I have contemplated moving to another country. Wall Street, politicians, banks, and some of the media seen to have all gone crazy.

The Coffee Party is so very appropriately named. How refreshing it is to know there is a movement beginning that is actually not devisive but unifying. This country is in serious trouble if we do not stop bickering and labeling. We have to find common ground and work together. Start with the things we can agree on and save the hardest for last. We can do it if we try.

To whom it may concern: We the people are disgusted & fed up with divisiveness. It is time to come together to take care of our country and our legal residents. It is time: *to eject all illegal aliens and go after the companies/corporations that employ them with massive fines - that will make it fiscally negligent to continue on current path. Use the money to help secure the borders and provide those who are willing to follow the proper procedures a more efficient Immigration & Naturalization Service. *to stop playing "World Police" by stopping all military support for any other nation, unless they are willing to pay the actual costs. *to end the war on drugs by decriminalizing/legalizing and applying a consumption tax on all of these substances. *for the FairTax Act and to abolish the IRS, which will allow individuals the ability to spend or save more their money as they see fit. *to spend only money that has already collected… quit spending money you/we do not have, that our children nor our grandchildren will be able to afford. If you feel the insatiable urge to build: *a school – build it in the USA. *a road – build it in the USA. *a water treatment plant – build it in the USA. *a refinery – build it in the USA. *a state of the art utility grid – build it in the USA. If you feel the insatiable urge to feed people – feed the hungry in the USA.

We must be able to see that civil and peaceful debate and dissent are more patriotic than either mindless compliance or hateful polarization and violence. Just as in our family relationships we have to keep in mind that our relationships with our loved ones are more important than winning arguments with them, the bond we share as citizens of what is now the oldest democratic republic in the world is more important than political parties.

Please find a way to decrease the power of the NRA. I truely believe there are some very dangerous kooky groups and individuals that are allowed to purchase and own guns and automatic weapons that have no business owning them and alot has to do with the NRA and their lobbyists. I also want to neutralize Palin and Bachmannn and their inflamatory mentality. Work hard; we're counting on your voice to show the Tea Party and the rest of the USA that we can have different religions and views, but keep our freedom and still live civily. We also need to express to the Religious right that their view and beliefs are not necessarily held by all and we are entitled to our beliefs without recriminations. I believe a people can be good people and be agnostic too. Pass that along as well. Lastly, please talk about corruption in: Politics and Politicians Fox News, distortion of truth in America and being a Responsible News Port Lobbyists thanks so much for being our voice. I think the USA has alot to do to become fair and good.

It was angry hate-filled talk radio that ignited the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Violence can be triggered by repetitive hate-talk, heard over and over relentlessly, blaming a person or people for whatever is going wrong in a nation state. Let's tell Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and others to STOP advocating violence and stop indulging themselves in provocative, nasty and personal attacks.

HATE is NEVER a family value. We all have different upbringing, experiences, and opinions. That doesn't make those who think like us all "right" and all others "wrong". We're just different. And with few exceptions, I don't believe we are all that far apart from each other in many of our beliefs. By using violent language we are dividing our country and ourselves. This has to stop. We have to come together and try to find SOLUTIONS. Keep an open mind; your beliefs may be based on inaccurate information. We don't have to all agree, but we can be civil about it.

I want to remain anonymous however I am very interested in bringing back a civil tongue today. Obama is doing a great job keeping up our spirits during these difficult times. I really enjoyed his State of the Union Speech. I also enjoyed seeing the Republicans and Democrats sitting next to each other and using their cloths and tie colors to state their party affiliations. Negative politics and the disrespect politicians show each other today has cast such a negative image on the political system today and is truly embarrassing to watch. The media feeds on these antics which makes it next to impossible to watch the news today. I have recently chosen to tune into Gayle King for the news instead because she uses respect and a more positive up beat approach to the subjects she discusses. Obama has kept his smile and positive attitude through it all and is such a good example for all of us.
43 Peter Mikkelsen Richland Washington 99354 1/28 - 9:43 PM
We hear, quite loudly and quite often from certain Tea Party advocates, that violent rhetoric, and even violent confrontations (a favorite is Andrew Jackson's propensity for dueling), were de rigeur for our earlier national political interactions. I will say simply that we, as a nation, have grown beyond such and that growth is to our credit.
44 CeCe Fuqua Medford Oregon 97501 1/28 - 9:18 PM
When authority figures use language such as "lock and load" and "put the cross hairs" on certian people or areas, this might possibly cause certian people to react or behave in unpredictable ways. I thought that as human beings we had risen above the need for spiteful, trite, childishness such as this. Now it is getting people shot...how much worse can it get?
45 Gary Clark Yacolt Washington 98675 1/28 - 7:26 PM
There is no reason for violent speech except for emotional fulfillment for extremely frustrated citizens to vent hostility toward (often undeserving) targets that they believe to be in some manner responsible for their grievous state of being. Let us not only eliminate the rhetoric, but also work on reducing the injustices that foment such hostilities, and misinformation promulgated by self-serving ideologues.

Let's start another petition asking that news media be more responsible in deciding and presenting "news you need" versus "salacious headlines that sell advertising." Too much of what is shown are stories that, while they might be interesting to some, really don't make any difference to our daily lives. On the other hand, rulings being made in Congress are NOT being called to light on the news, and many of these really DO affect my life.... like the repeal of the healthcare reform bill, which will remove my ability to insure my newly-graduated college student who cannot afford health insurance on her own.

The National Rifle Association has a death grip on our country. Guns kill innocent people. Smart gun control would be to NOT let mentally unstable people own weapons they can use to mow down a crowd of citizens exercising their civil rights. How many more must die before we do something to stop this madness?

"Civility, tolerance, and understanding" are in fact the very values Congresswoman Gifford was demonstrating as she fulfilled her appropriate role in getting feedback from her constituents. The very fact that she was faithful in her duties made her a target of a most disturbed individual who had himself been incited by violent rhetoric and hateful vendettas encouraged DAILY on talk radio and FOX News. This behavior on the airwaves is beyond the pale of free speech and cannot be tolerated in a stable democracy.

We have lost every metaphorical war we "fought" by making the people who disagree with us the problem. While I don't know the impact of violent rhetoric on the unstable, I am sure that it doesn't help solve the problems. At the end of the day the "enemy" is the problem and the solution is spread across all the points of view. Collaboration and understanding should be our approach.

We're a nation that has the Pursuit of Happiness as one of its founding principles. How can anyone, liberal, centrist or conservative, pursue such an ideal as Happiness through vitriol and poisonous discourse? It is impossible. Compassion and understanding are but two traits of a happy human being. These can only be attained through listening and thoughtfully considering the debate of informed and intelligent people. If we are, as so many profess, the greatest nation on earth, we damn well better start to listen before we speak, and then to speak with courtesy, respect and the knowledge that no one is right 100% of the time. That being true, no one is wrong 100% of the time, either. Those with opposing viewpoints to our own may well have ideas and solutions that would never have come to us if we had only listened to those we agree with. It's time to be the people we say we are. This country will eat itself alive itself if we don't.
77 Glen Larsen Anita Iowa 50020 1/19 - 4:37 PM

It is time to bring civility to our country. These deep divides in our nation is causing violence and chaos at a time when unity must prevail. Politians need to open their eyes and see that their rhetoric is provoking a division that will bring our wonderful country down in even lower. United, we will stand, but divided we will fall.
79 Martin Shamburg Bonham Texas 75418 1/19 - 4:09 PM
It is time for the nonsense to stop. The people of this nation are fed up with our politicians, and our news media, destroying all unity in this country, and making us laughing stock for the whole world. Our politicians try to sell democracy around the world as the best form of government, using our country as the model. Responsible behavior, honesty, and civility of speech have escaped our civilization. Who else would want the kind of behavior from their politicians that our media broadcasts to the world on a daily basis?
80 Michael Meredith St. Louis Missouri 63146 1/19 - 3:25 PM
Rep. Giffords was shot by a mentally ill person. But what if the next victim of politically motivated violence is essentially rational, yet pushed over the brink by the harsh rhetoric that feeds the 24 hour news cycle? We simply cannot allow this to continue!
81 Hope Jackson 1/19 - 2:44 PM

Something MUST be done about certain right-wing media outlets who misrepresent the facts and misrepresent themselves as news media. These organizations pose a serious threat to our safety, victimize a vulnerable population, and dis-credit those who may carry valid conservative views. When the single intent is to profit by inciting fear, anger, paranoia and retribution, these organizations present nothing less than a subtle form of terrorism to confused populations.

86 Perry Ford Aurora Colorado 80014 1/19 - 1:14 PM
It breaks my heart that we have to create a movement for civility, but we are in dire straits now as a culture and even as a species. We are headed toward a world too filled with hate and frustration. I fear that it will come to a head soon in the form of a societal calamity. There is no reason for it. We must stop the madness. Humans have spent incalculable amounts of money and centuries perfecting our capacity to kill each and inflict suffering. But how many resources do we spend learning how to live together in peace? Conflict is inevitable, but violence is not. But we are so conditioned to jump straight to force and brutality to resolve conflict. We must not succumb to that as the most appropraite response. I am tired of fighting. It shouldnt be this hard to just live in peace. It should be the easiest thing to do. But with the hatemongers and greed merchants spewing vitriol and blaming everyone but themselves for the world's woes, the misinformed masses glom onto the hate message and make everything ugly, mean and nasty. And, frankly, many of us find the haters to be too scary to confront. But we cannot let the bullies win. We must stand united and demand a return to respecful discourse. I yearn for peaceful, respectful debate. I don't want to agree with everyone. I want to hear everyone.

We can talk until the end of time; however, the only way people will ever change is to take them out of the box they were put in from childhood. Stop being childish in the adult world! Step out and look again. Use the spirit given mind. The spirit we are given is expansive, it is good and only wants good for the universe. When mind is used in a destructive way, the brain cells are twisted. Negativity can only attract more of the same. Apparently, the "parasite" (to use the word of Don Miguel Ruiz) is stronger than any other option those individuals have at this particular time in life. There are so many more beautiful ways to use our mind. In the world of destruction/matrix, the ego is very strong; so strong that the individual in whom it is so strong is unaware of the damage it does. I can only remember the words of the peace song: Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.
91 Mark Merizan Sherwood Oregon 97140 1/19 - 12:32 PM
The rhetoric is a sign that almost our entire political process has been taken over by extremists. It has to stop. We need to still do what is right - but we don't need to do it by attacking others, verbally or in any other way. Having our own good boundaries is the best way to be able to listen to the vituperation of others and not let it get to us. It is not easy, but as patriots it is the only way to begin to restore our great republic. It cannot survive much more of this downward spiral. It is time to reverse the trends and start treating one another with dignity and respect - regardless of how we ourselves are treated.

Lets work together, in civility, on all the major problems that are facing our great Country. Corporations do not fit my definition of individuals and I believe they should not be afforded the same rights as ordinary citizens. It is also my opinion that the recent Supreme Court decision regarding campaign contributions by corportations has killed what was left of our democracy. You are free to disagree, of course, but hate, name calling and vitriolic talk is not helpful.

A house divided against itself cannot stand. Too many use language as a weapon to divide and not as persuasion to unite us. Doing so just hurts our country and is the least patriotic speech there is, even done in the name of patriotism. We are not silenced by showing good judgement when we speak because we will only be heard when we do. Speech used as a weapon is never heard, only taken as an attack and can only expect the same in return.

with lots of hope for Cong. Giffords and with hope that Palin will tone down her rhetoric, honest people can discuss politics with civility and dignity, I sign this. I believe that politics has been hijacked by the fringe minority who believe violence is the answer, and the vitriolic few who feel that by shouting down discourse, then and only then will they be heard. I believe in the separation of church and state, and hope that people keep their own religious beliefs to themselves. They can worship as they see fit; just do not try to impose their beliefs on me. A mans religion is not the measure of a man (or woman). It is my belief that the people who shout about their "Christian values," usually can't stand up to close scrutiny. Values are values, ethics are ethics, regardless of which church or synagogue or mosque, a person attends.

No one speaks of the 100-10-1 pyramid. But 100 random acts of violence or lack of tolerance lead to 10 more serious events and 1 ultimate event which is often a fatality. So we are all participating if we are involved in the 100 'minor' acts. We know this rule in business. We focus on improving small safety violations to keep our employees safe. It does appear to work, if nothing more than to keep us focused on what is important.

108 John Wilson Raleigh North Carolina 27636 1/19 - 9:58 AM
Within the word "violent", I include behaviors such as deception, derision, ridicule, disrespect for the President and other similar forms of verbal abuse. There are factions in America who actually use and proudly promote intimidation, extortion and con-man tactics. "Truth" to these people means whatever they can get others to believe, no matter how devious the intent. A current example is the GOP tactic of voting to repeal Health Care Reform as a fulfillment of their pledge to voters. It is deceptive because it is likely impossible to do, so they have characterized a failed attempt as a fulfillment of a promise. The campaign against Health Care Reform was basically a lie, simply a use of public discontent for political gain. This kind of psychological manipulation has no place in American democracy. Elections (such as 2010) should not turn on such nefarious practices; not to mention voter intimidation, the attack on Acorn and other hard-ball tactics. Yes, "violent rhetoric" goes far beyond mere hate speech and includes verbal manipulation and abuse. This kind of political game-playing has no place in our elections.

It is still shocking to me how politicians and members of the media have been able to start such a hateful uprising in this country. The shooting in Arizona did not come as a surprise frankly it was surprising the incident had not occurred last year. When did it become acceptable to carry fire arms to a political rally? When a half Black President was elected. This period will be remembered as one of those ugly times in American history when the Tea Party tried to drag this country back to the days when dogs and tear gas where used against the citizens. I am truly grateful for those who do not sit silent and stand up for civility in an intelligent manner.

Not just violent rhetoric needs changing but the pervasive violence, incivility, vulgar language that is everywhere in our society needs changing. Sooner or later some people will think that violence, incivility and vulgar language is alright, cool, okay to do, etc. This cheapens our society and leads eventually to the violence we saw in Tucson, Arizona-the end product of a cheapened country.

It might help this overall endeavor to look to history (maybe by organizing readings of many historical documents ranging from many perspectives and eras), to remind us that each of us is part of a big picture much larger than any one of us and that we often repeat events without knowledge of their history. One person learning about history automatically gains another perspective about their present situation in life--often, it is tempering.

Yes, yes, yes. This is heaven. My husband and I have been heartened by this group effort. I tried to find out about a coffee party meeting in Eugene, and did get the name of a restaurant. But whenI called them to find outwhat time, they didn't know anything about one. I will continue to try to be involved. We often contact out congressmen. We both think: 1. Health should be not for profit. We are for single payer unless something else sounds better. Get insurance companies out of it. We are both retired, under 65 and pay $1500/month as our copays and pills continue to rise. We are drowning. 2. We are definately for public financing. Shorten the running time and no private funding. 3. Get more liberal thinking people on the Supreme Court. We are in a war with the wealthy corp. winning. A corporation should not be considered human. Thank you for your work in this area. We can't come to Wash. in Jan. but will follow this refreshing way to be involved and have a voice.

Our politicians also need to stop shooting off their mouths (pun intended) and then running away without answering questions. That behavior, though not as bad as "reload" and "2nd amendment remedies" and "gunsights (aka "surveyor's marks"), is also uncivil. They are not celebrities avoiding papparazzi - they are supposed to be OUR elected representatives answerable to US. Any elected official who refuses to answer constituents' questions should be recalled for not doing their job.
131 Greg Vine Winchendon Massachusetts 01475 1/19 - 3:58 AM
America has often gone through periods when dangerous rhetoric and imagery has served to embitter and embolden a usually small but energized group of people who see violence as a legitimate strategy, if it becomes necessary, for reaching political goals; not just obvious, hard core violence, such as the use of firearms, but violence in the form of intimidation and humiliation. We saw it in the evolution of the Populist Party at the turn of the 20th century, in the rise of the Klan in the 1920s, in the nationwide popularity of Fr. Coughlin in the '30s, in the rise of Joe McCarthy in the '50s, and - in the '70s and early '80sin the re-emergence of "state's rights" parties that grew out of the candidacy of George Wallace. But, thanks to modern communication technology, it has never been easier to spread messages of violence and hatred. Only through a concerted, coordinated effort can the purveryors of hate and hurt be defeated...or, at the very least, their influence checked. We must end violent rhetoric for the good of our country, our children, ourselves.

C'mon let's be honest. Those who yell and scream are only trying to cover up ignorance and a lack of understanding of what it takes to be a citizen in a real democracy. Read, listen, research, talk, engage and listen to your friends, your neighbors, your family, and to those who are in power. Take their words seriously, and formulate your position. You do not have to agree, but you must agree that it's OK to disagree. Learning to disagree in a civilized way is an essential part of (political and social) education. Being part of a pluralist society is the consequence of the development if our extraordinary democracy and being able to express our thoughts freely is one of our most cherished freedoms. We can only be heard if we speak truthfully from an informed point of view and the more eloquent we are the more convincing our thoughts may become.

To pass this on to our children and grand children is very sad. I hope that we can start listening to each other and not just talking at each other. We have always taken an interest in our government, but as of late, we don't want to hear the bad mouthing that seems such a part of it. We hope it will stop and that someone can get through to Rush and Sarah.

This is an important moment in our history. The right wing is admitting to not being civil or respectful of their fellow law makers. And this is important, as they have been the MOST uncivil. Incivility and "warlike" language serve as a shield to real discussion of issues and the work needed to solve national problems. And the owners of the media are the ones making lots of money off of this entertaining, negative discourse. Meanwhile, the work of congress is not getting done. Please vow to be calm and respectful and to call your fellow politicians on their behavior is they fall away. Proceed in a way the little girl who lost her life would be proud of. Thank you.

The need for balanced rhetoric has never been more important. Remember the days when Bob Dole would visit the Kennedy or Clinton Whitehouse, and the country would move forward. Remember when Ray LaHood started meetings among Republicans and Democrats. Remember when William Buckley would invite his strongest opponents to civil and spirited debate on his TV show. None of that is apparent now, and it is so important that we get leaders back who can place the needs of the country before the needs of dollar seekers.

I hope that this message doesn't fall on deaf ears. Already the climate in Washington is rising to one of finger pointing and refusals to take credit for the situation that all of us may have caused. I for one am ashamed to admit how often I got into heated political debates where I used such language. The violence should stop, we all are responsible and to blame, either by casting our ballots in support of such rhetoric or by using the language to spread hate ourselves. No one but an insane member of our society pulled the trigger last Saturday, but the climate in which we live is not conducive to sensible debate, reasonable discussion and violence free political discussions. I am pleased to sign this petition, and I hope that many others do the same. It's time for us to behave as adults, not children.

I am attempting to call The House Of Representative’s Speaker John Boehner's office and I have emailed his office with a copy of this statement/letter. I am writting to plead with this office to stop the assault on our health care reform. I have been on hold for over 45 minutes, how dare this office stand behind our patriotic anthems and refuse to communicate with the citizens of our country on the eve of the announced largest planned assault on the people of our country, a country that our families have fought and died to preserve while threatening every man woman and child in our country with the repeal of our desperately needed health care reform. My name is Nancy H. Franco and I am calling from Philadelphia Pennsylvania to invoke House Speaker John Boehner to stop playing political games and end the wasteful hurtful repeal of health reform. We need reform in our country and health reform is paramount of that reform if we are to survive as a nation of free people and preserve the heritage of our people for generations to come.

The bell curve for politicians is upside down right now: those who are on the fringes are on the high side of the numbers. Those who can see both sides of an issue are in the middle but badly outnumbered. Hence the inverted bell curve. Keep getting those ethical "name" people backing you. More credibility occurs in that environment. Consider starting a moderate third party. You can't produce results without joining the fray (albeit in a credibly ethical manner; no power grabbers involved.) Get going on it now. I am not an organizer or renowned leader, but will follow and help. Good luck. preamble

I don't think it's the media's fault that the Tucson shooting happened, but I do think it ought to be a blatant sign for them to act responsibly, just as the Terry Jones Quran burning fiasco exemplified the irresponsible sensationalism of profit-seeking media companies. What happened to "Do unto others as you want them to do unto you"??? Also, If you can't say something nice or at least intelligently, don't say anything at all. We seem to have forgotten that we are free to say what we wish as long as we will also take the consequences of our peers' disapproval. We can't tell our neighbors anything in any manner and not expect a retort or their back The same goes for travelling with others, working with others, going to classes with others and kids to their parents. Granted the parent must be civil to his/her child/ren or trouble will start right there--as most of this we see now has started. Most of what each person knows started first at home with the parents and then was refined or coarsened by peers and classmate, working partners. You decide. If one does not respect those around him/her, it's difficult to expect them to be respectful of you.

My Faith teaches that "Truthfulness is the foundation of all human virtues." "Breathe not the sins of others so long as thou art thyself a sinner." "Let deeds, not words be thy adorning." I will never vote for any person who misrepresents the facts, spreads half-truths and inuendo or feels they must destroy their oponent's character to obtain their goals.

I'm tired of the irrational rhetoric, the encouragement of loonies to believe untruths, the "just say no" blockage of the business of "we the people." I'm tired of "talking heads" spitting out lies without taking any responsibility because they claim they are "just entertainers." I'm tired of psuedo-politicians convincing each other that if they don't get their way, then they will just not do what's best for their own constituents and the American people. At least my views are being voiced by Sen. McCaskill and, to a lesser degree, by Congressman Cleaver. I am worried for our future as a peaceful, unified Country. I spent 21+ years serving my Country in the Marine Corps, got called names and yelled/spit at while doing so, spent quite a bit of time away from my family, and I was OK with all of it. Not everyone understands what it means to serve. But most of our current politicians do not "serve" our Country. They are in politics to experience power and enrich themselves. And I am tired of it.

There is so much anger in this country. As our elected officials, you are responsible to represent us, not only in Congress, but to the rest of this country and, indeed, the world. Do so intelligently and with dignity. Conduct yourselves in Congress as we must conduct ourselves in public in our daily lives. If we attacked everyone with the same level of anger and vitriol you display, there would be blood in the streets.

When the Congress was formed, the men that were a part of it were primarily gentlemen from the South who treated each other with general courtesy. In a rare lack of foresight the Founders and Framers did not anticipate a time when the divisiveness would grow so great as to dissolve into backbiting and backstabbing or there would be rules built in. It is time for a new wave of civility, moderation and compromise to wash over the political spectrum.

Very much agree. Posted a comment on CNN yesterday below an article regarding Palin's insistence on not getting quiet. Many of my thoughts were similar, and I did place some responsibility on the media, the way technology is being used, and corporate mentality. CNN withdrew my article from their posting. I'm sorry, I regret it, but I expected it. How will we come out of this very vicious circle unless we commit to caring, and work very deeply from the grassroots. There is so much core that needs rethinking and re-creating. Hopefully, we will make it. Thank you.

It really is time to end the hateful, spiteful, lying rhetoric. Let's ground our discourse in facts and keep the common good (not the linings of our pockets) uppermost in our minds. Jus' Sayin'

I am not signing this out of some knee-jerk reaction to the violence in Tucson. Over the past year, I have found myself thinking these very thoughts over and over wondering if I was the only one who noticed such a vehement tone to the national debate scene and how upsetting it is. Diplomacy, tactfulness and maybe just some basic courtesy would be gratefully appreciated by this citizen. I'm tired of watching our so-called leaders scream their message as if I can't hear them otherwise. Thank you for this opportunity to make my concerns heard.

The purpose of the violent rhetoric is to prevent thoughtful discussion and preserve the wealth and power of those who presently have it. For instance, in the area of healthcare reform, thoughtful public discussion never broke through the noise. The commercial media, of course, could not report the facts because they would lose huge ad revenues from drug companies and commercial insurers. The simple facts are that there are only two significant sources of waste in our healthcare system: overpriced drugs and huge administrative costs, both of which could be eliminated by a single-payer system. Drug companies and insurers were not willing to give up their billions, so they orchestrated a high-volume campaign of fear, lies, and vitriol. I hope the majority of Americans don't have to become destitute before they realize what the driving force behind the incivility is.

We need to set an appropriate example of civility for our children, if nothing else. As President Obama said, we need to live our lives as shining examples for children like Christina, to fulfill her dreams of how it should be.

People must stop calling politicians liars, corrupt, unpatriotic, and anti-christs. We need to honor and respect all human beings regardless of their race, creed, color, gender, or political party. We also have to do something about the guns in this country and how they are licensed and sold. It is a disgrace. Money is the only thing that matters to the corporations and politicians in the US. If it makes a profit then sell it no matter who it hurts. Our country has lost its soul to corporate greed.

Though disagreement political disdain has existed since the dawn of this great nation, now has come a time that we must say enough is enough. The vitriol in this country has gotten out of hand.

I have strong opinions but I support civility in all discussions and am offended by the anger voiced when someone disagrees. We can't go on like this. I truly believe the American people will appreciate the tone down and that side may be the winner as a result.

As we have seen in Arizona, hatred has no place in our supposedly civilized country. Angry rhetoric and lies and half-truths can inflame people who are already feeling marginalized or insecure or mentally unbalanced. Group mentally, inflamed, is dangerous. In a democracy all parties can work together if each is respectful of the other. This has not been the case lately with the Republicans refusing to cooperate with President Obama. I would like to see that changed. Work together for the good of the country, not for power for one party.

Please let President Obama do his job. Show respect for him and others as well as for yourself. Tell the truth and quit fabricating false info that causes hate from people and causes circumstances that are detrimental to our elected officials and others. I love America and millions do too. If you do your job and quit saying the America people do not want the HEALTHCARE PROGRAM repealed, you are lying!!! Tell the truth!! The new Healthcare Program does alot for many. If you all wanted to trim the budget, why all the fringe benefits for the wealthy and why all the PET PROJECTS???

One of the reasons I first joined the Coffee Party was because I felt the need to encourage open civil discourse. We cannot solve the huge problems facing this great country if we cannot peacefully engage in civil discourse about the issues facing us.

In light of recent events, I believe it is time to go back to working out our problems without throwing verbal stones at the opposition. We need to show an example to other countries, and right now we are not doing a good job. y

As a society we need to have reporting of our political issues to become and remain an informed nation. However, as citizens we must demand that the media report the facts on both sides of an issue and let us form our own opinion. We must also allow public debate on both sides of our political issues. However, the debate must remain civil and once the debate has ended we need to respect the opinions of others as just that, opinions. Not right or wrong beliefs but each individual’s opinion. Once we view both sides of an issue we can then come to a satisfactory compromise somewhere in the center of the opposing views.

The unbelievable does not stop. The real problem as I see it, is that the democrats themselves. Democrats need to work on making our party the party we want it to be, and not worry about the right. Get our sh__ together, decide our mission, our plan and go for it. Quit waiting for the Republicans to be good so we can move forward with our plans. We do not need them to help us!

Our politics and our government is just sickening! Please, all of you in office, please put the greater good, all in this country!!, foremost in your minds when speaking, negotiating, legislating. If the country as a whole improves, your likely to get reelected without all the lobbying, backdoor money, corporations and corruption!
