Shared Purpose Plenary 7305 2414
The Plenary group on SharedPurpose.Net is an open public discussion group and framework for everyone who joins us. Thanks for being here.
Active Organizers 44 476
This is a place for Organizers to come together, chat about what is possible, about what works, about best practices, about things you'd like to see happen. An Organizer is someone actively working on "leading" a local group. Nothing more, nothing less. While this group may post things which will appear on the Plenary Group, this is a group specifically set up for discussions by Organizers.
Principles and Purpose Working Group 221 441
The Principles and Purpose Working Group was a self-organized volunteer advisory committee of Coffee Party members. The Group came together in August 2010, to do two things:
  • Engage a large, national sample of Coffee Party members in a conversation about their visions for the Coffee Party. Use member comments and feedback to develop a series of member-supported draft statements of the Coffee Party's Core Values, its Purpose, and its strategic Goals --- and present these statements to the Board of the Coffee Party for the Board's consideration.
  • Conduct this project via an open, inclusive, collaborative, civil, and democratic process of dialogue, deliberation, and decision making that can be replicated throughout the Coffee Party.
The Surveys A key part of this project was a series of three online Surveys on the draft "guiding statements" of the Coffee Party that the Working Group was developing in response to suggestions and feedback from Coffee Party members. The first two of these Surveys were conducted between November 2010 and January 2011. The third and last Survey was conducted in February-March 2011. To see the final Survey, please click here.
PDF of Complete Revised Draft Guiding Statements The current Survey is based on the Revised drafts of the series of Core Values, Purpose, and Goals statements that the Working Group has been developing, based on the input of Coffee Party members. As an aid to taking the Survey, you are strongly encouraged to reference the Working Group's master document of these draft statements. To download a PDF of this document, please click here. A number of the draft Goals statements include lists of member-suggested shorter-term Strategy options for achieving these Goals. Although the Working Group is not including the Strategy options in this Survey, these detailed lists of options have been an important resource in shaping the draft Goals themselves. And in two cases, thematic summaries of these Strategy options are included in the Survey as Sub-Goals of the Main Goals.
Learn More About This Project For additional background on the history of this project, please click here. Tips for Using This Page If you are new to the Shared Purpose network, you soon will discover that there's a lot going on here. A lot of different conversations at a lot of different tables. Here are a few starting tips that should make it easier for you to find the Working Group table and pull up a chair to the conversation we're having here. How to find the Working Group on Shared Purpose Once you're signed in to Shared Purpose, you'll see a light-green text box near the top of the left sidebar. If the box reads "Principles and Purpose Working Group," you're already here. If not, scroll down to the small box immediately below the sidebar navigation menu. This box includes a list of all the Shared Purpose groups you've joined. Just click "Principles and Purpose Working Group," and you'll be directed here shortly. How the find the conversation Once you're on the Working Group page, click the "Forum" tab at the top of the the page, to be directed to the thread listing and the message-posting interface. How to post a message Once you have entered your subject line and your message, there are three things you must do --- and you must do all three things --- before clicking "POST message":
  • First, click the checkbox just below the message field, indicating that your "message follows the guidelines." These are the Civility guidelines by which everyone who registers on Shared Purpose agrees to abide.
  • Second, select your audience. The dropdown menu just below the Civility checkbox offers two options. You can "send by email to all subscribers." Or you can "post to web only --- do not send by email." If you are replying to a thread, rather than starting a new one, you also will see an option to send your message only as a private email to the person who wrote the message to which you are replying.
  • Third, select "Preview" or "Send message now," in the dropdown menu just below the audience selection menu. To preview your message, select "Preview," then click "POST message." Your message will not post --- and the composition interface still will be visible. To send your message, simply scroll down; change the setting to "Send message now"; and click "POST message."
How to edit your message after posting Click into your message in the thread listing, and you will see an "Edit" tab. This tab enables group members to edit and save changes to their own posted messages. Changes are reflected only in what appears on Shared Purpose.
Campaign on Big Money in Politics 159 197
"The Coffee Party is urgently calling for a sustained, citizen-led movement to address the problem of money in politics and the harmful effects of the Citizens United decision." We are coming together to discuss this call to action, and to build and empower this citizen-led movement.

THE POWER OF THE CITIZEN MUST OVERTAKE THE POWER OF MONEY http://www.coffeepartyusa.com/Summit-Jan20-21 The day after the 2010 midterm election is now upon us. In the coming weeks, as we learn more about the avalanche of outside funding that dominated this year's races, we are taking steps to focus the nation on an issue that goes far beyond partisan politics. The fact that the power to legislate can be so easily purchased in Washington is at the heart of the frustrations most Americans share. It is the answer to the question, "Why is our government so unresponsive to the people?" We need to focus our efforts on solving this problem now — not as members of any political party, but as the American people demanding fair representation. To restore government of, for and by the people (not the funders), we must insist on legislative and Constitutional remedies to the reckless Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, which declared corporations are persons with inalienable rights, allowed to spend unlimited, undisclosed amounts of money to influence our elections and thereby dominate our government. Unfortunately, real leadership on this issue will not come from Washington. It simply can't because any elected leader who seeks to address this problem will face the wrath of institutions who can simply threaten to destroy them. The power of the voter must overtake the power of money. The leadership must come from us, the citizens. We must make them do it. The Coffee Party is urgently calling for a sustained, citizen-led movement to address the problem of money in politics and the harmful effects of the Citizens United decision. Our growing coalition already includes the Backbone Campaign, Fix Congress First, and Move to Amend. Today we are reaching out to many other organizations such as Public Campaign, Free Speech for People and Common Cause. We will:
  • Become "Paul Reveres" in our communities, and inform the public about how this problem is crippling our economy and our jeopardizing our future
  • Help bring together a broad-based coalition of existing organizations
  • Develop strategies to make this THE issue for the 2012 elections, including recruiting candidates and raising funds for a Political Action Committee (PAC)
  • Focus our respective memberships on a grassroots campaign to put pressure on the House of Representatives to pass the Fair Elections Now Act during the lame-duck session
  • Work with our coalition partners to organize community meetings and regional strategy summits around the United States

Truth Squad 110 63
We're done with tolerating the misinfotainment culture. It's clever to disguise propaganda as entertainment, but it's immoral and dangerous. Join the Coffee Party Truth Squad. Let's collaborate on short-term and long-term strategies to squash misinformation/smear campaigns. ************ Letter from Annabel, Nov 12, 2010 Hi everyone! Let's collaborate on our ideas both short-term and long-term. Here is an idea that I have. We have nearly 325,000 followers on Facebook, about 70,000 email subscribers from the website, and over 8,000 Twitter followers. Roughly one out of a 1000 Americans follow the Coffee Party. If we can get them to help us spread information, we can have impact. We need form a Rapid Response Team to release fact checks at least once a week. We can use email, fb, twitter, youtube, blogging to respond rapidly to misinformation. We would like volunteers to sign up for one or more of these positions:
  • Gatherers to gather instances of misinformation.
  • Researchers to research the facts.
  • Writers to write up compelling communication pieces reporting the facts.
  • Spreaders to help us get our fact checks out there.
  • Correctors to demand corrections and accountability to spreaders of misinformation.
  • Managers to help manage the volunteers and work flow.

Florida Florida 1003 20
The Coffee Party exists to convene, equip and empower a movement of citizens who work together to strengthen American democracy. Our purpose in Florida is to organize and grow the Coffee Party to provide a powerful voice on state and national issues. Shared Purpose provides us a place to meet, share ideas, and build a movement that will grow in influence if WE make it happen. In spite of the Big Money that dominates elections, no corporation can step into the voting booth and elect anyone. Our challenge is to inform voters on issues and solutions, help them see that the power of the people can change government, and mobilize them to act. We have too many issues to sit on the sidelines and let someone else make decisions for us.
Lobby For The People - National Day of Lobbying Jan 20, 2011 34 15
Here are the steps to collaborate with a team of volunteers from across America:
  1. Create a profile and join this group
  2. Use the “My Groups” button in the left column to sign in to the Lobby for the People group. A green box at the top of the page will say, “You have signed in to your group.”
  3. Check the “Forum” for current projects and strategy discussions by clicking on the “Forum” button at the top, center.
  4. Click on the “Documents” button (also top, center) to upload the letter you plan to send to your Senator or Representative. This will serve as an inspiration and reference for others, and an idea factory for talking points. Or, you can ask for feedback on your letter.
  5. The “Documents page” will give you access to collaborative documents, such as tips for effective lobbying visits to Congressional offices. You can create your own versions of these documents if you have experiences to share.
January 20, 2010 OVERVIEW: Participants in Washington will gather in the Dirksen Senate Office Building's basement cafeteria (called the North Servery located on the northwest corner of the building). You can enter the building at the corner of C St & 1st St NE Washington, DC 20002. Map: http://www.visitingdc.com/map/capitol-hill-map.htm 10 AM on Thursday Jan. 20th, 2011. Lobby Day will also take place at local Senate and Congressional constituent offices around the country. You don't have to be paid to talk to your representatives in Congress. These offices in Washington, and in towns and cities across America, were built for us. Our representatives are elected by us to do the business of real people; not just the bidding of monied interests. You will find that the staffers are thrilled to receive constituents representing themselves, lobbying for themselves and For the People, instead of hired guns paid for by hyper-partisan think tanks, corporations, or special interest groups. Each team will have a leader with lobbying experience, and each participant will receive training materials and an overall game plan. The purpose of these meetings will be to establish a collaborative relationship and a common goal to pass campaign finance reform legislation and other measures to limit corporate influence on American policies.

by R. B. There is a serious need to connect the many projects and people that are working towards similar goals. We have identified money in politics, or specifically, corruption in all levels of government (including many corporations), as a central problem that crosses partisan lines like no other issue. We have identified that we can be most effective if we use our strengths as a large, grassroots network to:
  1. Identify other active, like-minded groups in the area.
  2. Promote, participate, and help with their events and projects that run parallel to causes and goals we support.
  3. Create a space online for organizers and people to meet, connect and strategize together.
Our goal: to empower people. Power is based on access and resources, and currently we live in a society in which a small group of people control the vast majority of Earth's resources, and therefore have greater access to money, information, and power. Communities, families, individuals, need to take back some of that power that has been slowly been eroded away. We can empower people the following ways:
  1. These three websites
    • www.facebook.com/coffeeparty
can serve various functions: they give people the ability to speak their mind in an open, respectful environment, access to greater information because of the link sharing features, organize with people all over the country, collaborate on projects, using private and shared groups to e-mail, create shared documents, and more. Training and help can be provided to anyone who is unsure how to use these assets. It is important to realize these online tools are still developing, like the Coffee Party. We should always be open to innovative and effective ideas that improve social media, ones that give more power to the people and make our online experiences more meaningful.
  2. For the long term, creating a method by which communities empower themselves and the individuals within them. This will be like a recipe, with many ingredients and several steps involved. This method or recipe can be applied anywhere, but will be different in each community or instance.

CP Internet Coordination and Collaboration 12 7
The Coffee Party has developed in part as a widely-distributed internet project, with many web sites and Facebook pages. These internet elements provide important support for our work together, but they have tended to develop as independent projects, without strong central organization. This tends to produce confusion and uncertainty in many people who are interested in what we are doing. It seems to be essential that we devise a clear strategy for organizing our work. Here in this group, we expect to use the "Collaborative Documents" feature as a way of gathering information and building a common vision of what we are doing and how we can work together. And we want to coordinate our work on the Internet with the work we are doing to develop chapters and local groups. We need a single design to tie all these pieces together. Help us take on this task, by identifying elements of the Coffee Party infrastructure that you feel are important and should be included within our design.

There are professional associations working in these fields, and we can learn from their suggestions. We can work together to build shared guidelines for our interactions here, for collaboration and teamwork throughout the Coffee Party, and as suggested recommendations for the entire USA. As a starting point, check the statement on "civility" that we have linked in our footer: click here

Group Process Facilitators 20 3
We are organizing this forum as a gathering place for group process experts -- experts on dialogue and deliberation, experts in "World Cafe" or "Appreciative Inquiry" or "Art of Hosting" -- to come together and exchange ideas and best practices for working in their local communities. We believe that the present situation in American politics offers an unprecedented and exciting opportunity for conveners and facilitators, to begin organizing trans-boundary conversations all over the USA. We need a national network of local conversations, bringing Americans together, establishing common ground, clearly identifying differences, exploring strategies to resolve them, and building a new sense of American national community and cooperation.
Core Values Project 37 2
We are working together to define the shared values of the Coffee Party. A small working group of volunteers has been working for several months to gather and refine a set of values. We began by collecting ideas from Coffee party writings and web sites, and then brought that list together. We then added more ideas that we picked up from the Convention in Louisville, and our working group has refined and consolidated that list. These values are a primary basis for the "elevator speech" of the Coffee Party (explaining who we are very briefly), and also an essential factor in the development of alliances (we can work more successfully with organizations and individuals who share these values). We are now presenting the results of this work to our broad membership, and we are interested in your opinions and feedback. You are invited to check off values that you believe in, and to suggest new values, if you feel that something is missing from our list.

Vision for a New Force in American Politics 48 2
The Coffee Party is at least in part a response to the deeply felt concern expressed by millions of Americans that our "politics is broken" -- indeed, that our system of government is broken. How can we respond to this concern? How can the Coffee Party be "an answer" to this problem? How can we organize? What can we do? Who should we contact? How can we emerge as an effective force, when the entire political establishment is invested in the highly polarized and combative two-party system? Let's find some people who care about this -- who have some ideas, who have some passion, who want to work on something like this, who will show up -- who will push buttons on the internet, or ring doorbells on the streets...

The Coffee Party "New Members" group is a place to welcome our new members -- to thank you for being here, to suggest answers to questions or issues you might have, to encourage you to get active in your community, to hear your ideas on what you think we should be doing. Resonant Semantics and the Tower of Babel 10 2
Annabel recently posted an essay on the Tower of Babel, and its influence on politics. There are many problems that arise through politics that are rooted in semantics and the way people use language. How are words defined? How do we decide whether "something is inside a category or not?" This is not an idle or purely academic question. "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". Civil society is regulated by law, and law is a matter of categories and boundaries. Nations, cities, states, all bureaucratic and organizational categories -- all are determined by boundaries and semantic principles. Is a particular thing "legal" or is it "illegal"? We are called to draw these distinctions and boundaries every day. But the human race has no solid way to define word meanings and these boundaries in rigid or universal ways. Words can always be misunderstood, and fights and indeed entire wars can emerge over word meanings and boundaries. How can this problem of Babel be approached and possibly overcome? Let us consider some advanced implications from the theory of language and political philosophy, and explore some emerging new solutions arising around the world.

Bring your own issues to an open friendly environment and find others with a variety of perspectives to discuss and work on your solutions or the ones we are already tackling.     We are starting to build a "pulse poll network" -- a system that sends out a brief poll or survey to our members, maybe every week, inviting them to contribute their ideas and perspective in a format they can "click" quickly, letting us know how they feel and who they are. We can let people speak, and tell us who they are, and what they see, and what they want to do. And we can help people find each other, and build community, and build transformative political energy where they are. Help us think this through. How should we do this? What should we include? How can we use this method to reach a large number of people, and give them a real voice in shaping where we are going?

The Statue of Liberty proclaims: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Do we know who she is speaking for? Who is she speaking about? Who do we welcome, who do we shun? Why? Immigration to the United States has been a major source of population growth and cultural change throughout much of the history of the United States. The economic, social, and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding ethnicity, economic benefits, jobs for non-immigrants, settlement patterns, impact on upward social mobility, crime, and voting behavior. As of 2006, the United States accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than all other countries in the world combined.

Project on Core Values 6 0
Discuss and review the core values of the Coffee Party. These values are a primary basis for the "elevator speech" of the Coffee Party (explaining who we are very briefly), and also an essential factor in the development of alliances (we can work more successfully with organizations and individuals who share these values). We are looking at a series of individual values that have emerged over several months of discussion.

Big Apple New York 106 0
The Big Apple Coffee Party is committed to diversity, civil discourse, acting independently of political parties, of corporations, and of political lobbying networks. We demand a government that responds to the needs of the majority of its citizens as expressed by our votes and by our voices—not corporate interests as expressed by misleading advertisements and campaign contributions. We want a society in which democracy is treated as sacrosanct and ordinary citizens participate out of a sense of civic duty, civic pride, and a desire to contribute to society. The Big Apple Coffee Party consists of grassroots activists who live in New York City who meet regularly to advance our common goals. **** This is a link to the wiki: http://politicalwisdom.wikispaces.com/Big+Apple+Coffee+Party

The Coffee Party of Santa Fe Coming Together to Reclaim Our American Democracy Who should sign the paychecks of our Congressional representatives: You, or Big Oil, Big Pharma and Wall Street? For decades, huge corporate contributions have been greatly influencing government policy, diminishing our rights as citizens and destroying our democratic way of life. Our rights are constantly under attack. Only We, the People, can stop the ever-escalating corporate takeover of our government.
